The English Team versus The South African Squad – Women’s Global Tournament Starts
Quiet now! All discussions have ended, at least for the moment, and England’s World Cup is ready to commence. The bad news is, they start with a tough game against South Africa. The good news is, they start with a tough game facing the South Africans. Victory today would give England instant momentum and justify the cautious confidence of their pre-tournament chatter.
Pre-Tournament Momentum
An impressive triumph versus the Aussies during their final preparatory match has heightened their belief, although the personal contributions by Alice Capsey (scoring 88 not out) and Sarah Glenn (taking 5 wickets for 32 runs) caused a small team-selection puzzle for Charlotte Edwards.
Edwards is known for her success, so there’s no danger that England will aim low. However, looking broadly they are in the slightly unusual position of having a very clear par for the tournament.
Tournament Expectations
Not making the last four might come as a small upset, despite the progress made by usual lower-ranked teams. Reaching the final in front of the Aussies or Indians, the two top contenders to win the competition, would be a serious achievement. And if England win it… it's best not to entertain that thought. It’s far too soon for that sort of talk.
This fixture commences at half past ten in the morning BST.
