World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Reduction Following United States Funding Pullout
This global public health agency disclosed intentions to reduce its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to over two thousand positions – before the middle of 2026.
Funding Shortfall Prompts Substantial Reorganization
The move comes following the US, previously the organization's biggest donor, pulled out funding previously this period.
Washington was responsible for about eighteen percent of the agency's total funding, creating a significant financial gap.
Expected Workforce Reductions
According to internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.
This decrease of 2,371 posts includes job cuts, employees retiring, and natural attrition.
"This year was one of the most difficult in WHO's existence, as we undertook a painful but necessary journey of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.
Budget Shortfall Remains
This Switzerland-headquartered organization now faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing almost a fourth of its required funding.
This amount marks an reduction from a prior projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.
Excluded Finances
These budget projections exclude a further $1.1bn in potential contributions from current discussions with various contributors.
The representative for the agency stated that the present unsecured part of the budget is in fact lower than in earlier periods, crediting this to several factors:
- A smaller total budget
- Initiation of a new fundraising campaign
- Higher in member states' required fees
This restructuring initiative is now approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to progress with a reshaped structure.
